Building Improvement

Pouring Concrrete

This summer, we have been VERY "under construction." See photo essay, dated 8/30/2010.

The short version of this story is we've been widening and fire-rating the downstairs hallway, creating a new egress from the Science Lab classroom out to Warder Street, AND, not related to our project to meet codes, remodeling the women's bathroom.

Background

During the summer of 2008, we learned that we had regulatory issues with regard to our facilities and would have to pursue zoning approval and meet fire and building code for a school.

In April 2009 we received approval from the City of Dayton Board of Zoning Appeas.

In May the City of Dayton approved a three phase approach that would result in meeting all requirements for educational use after the completion of phase three (at the time) in the summer of 2011.

A building permit for phase one, the installation of a fire alarm system meeting all requirements for educational use was received in June. We have a contract with Accurate Fire, Audio, Video & Security of Dayton and installation should be completed in July.

Phase two, to be completed in the summer of 2010 includes enclosing the stairwell and widening the hallway to our two lower-level classrooms to improve egress.

In phase three the following summer, a floor will be errected above the open area on the main floor to allow the expansion of the small classrooms and adding additional rooms on the upper level.

We also need more bathrooms, central air conditioning for the classrooms, and other quality of life improvements.
